TREMONT, Maine — A 70-year-old woman was injured after hiking alone by Bass Harbor Lighthouse on Friday.
It took rescue searchers about an hour and a half to find the unidentified woman who called 911 on an untraceable TracFone, according to Ed Pontbriand, a park ranger and emergency services coordinator for Acadia National Park. TracFones, a brand of prepaid cellphone, do not have GPS capabilities, Pontbriand said.
The woman suffered a head and hip injury after she fell on a cobble beach about one mile northeast of the lighthouse.
When park rangers and Southwest Harbor EMS found the woman, she was treated on the scene and loaded onto a stretcher where she waited for the Tremont harbor master boat to arrive at the rocky beach. She was then transferred to a lobsterman’s boat, which brought her to a Bass Harbor boat dock. The woman was then taken by ambulance to Mount Desert Island Hospital.
No other details were available.
