BUFFALO, N.Y. — Authorities say a young boy’s legs have been severed by a train in western New York.

Police tell Buffalo media outlets that they believe the boy was playing on the tracks on the city’s east side Monday night and may have been trying to hop on a passing train when its wheels ran over both his legs.

Andrew Gil tells WIVB-TV that he and another construction worker were nearby when a boy came running from the tracks asking for help for his friend. Gil says he and his coworker ran to the injured boy and saw that his legs had been severed. Gil says he then called 911.

The boy, believed to be about 10 years old, was taken to a hospital. Information on his condition wasn’t available Tuesday morning.
