PLAINVILLE, Conn. — A DUI checkpoint in Plainville became a makeshift maternity ward when a car approached with an expectant mother in labor. Bethel Hairston and her husband, Trevor, entered the Route 177 checkpoint early Sunday morning. Police requested an ambulance, which did not arrive fast enough. Cpl. Patrick Buden and four other officers used medical equipment on hand to deliver the baby.

Police say Christian Hairston, 5 pounds, 7 ounces, was born at 1 a.m.

Paramedics arrived and checked out mother and child and took them to New Britain Hospital. Police said all they are doing well.
