CLEVELAND, Texas — A veteran Liberty County fire chief who was found dead of a gunshot wound took his own life, the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled today.

Steve Wheeler, who served as fire chief and directed both ambulance and emergency management services in the town of Cleveland, was found Monday afternoon in the kitchen of his home in a rural area of Liberty County, north of Houston. He had been shot once in the chest.

Based on the angle of the bullet, as well as other evidence, the medical examiner concluded that Wheeler’s death was a suicide, said Capt. Harry Kelly, lead detective for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.
