SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — Two paramedics were awarded over $600,000 after being cleared of any wrongdoing.
Paramedics John Uebelacker and Matthew Schaller were fired in 2014 after the department allegedly found fault in their care of a patient; they were stripped of their licenses.
State EMS officials later cleared the two, reported The Star. In 2015, arbitrator Richard McLaughlin said the city did not have just cause to fire Uebelacker and Schaller, and that they should be rehired and compensated for lost wages.
McLaughlin also ruled that the investigation by Sun Prairie EMS was biased and faulty. He awarded Uebelacker around $168,000 for past damages and $140,000 in front pay. Schaller was awarded around $125,000 for past damages and $190,000 in front pay.
City officials are meeting Tuesday to discuss whether to pay or file an appeal.
