Stroke detector being tested by Australian responders

Emergency responders will trial a microwave-imaging helmet designed to detect strokes and other traumatic brain injuries before the patient gets to a hospital

HUNTER VALLEY, Australia — The Hunter region’s been chosen as the international testing sits for a revolutionary stroke detector.

The microwave-imaging helmet will allow ambulance paramedics to diagnose stroke and other traumatic brain injuries before the patient gets to hospital. The patient’s head is placed directly onto the device and then scanned, using antennas that emit low-energy microwaves.

A Swedish company has developed the Strokefinder, signing an agreement with the Hunter Medical Research Institute to do more research.
