DALLAS — The Dallas firefighter-paramedic who suffered near-fatal injuries earlier this month when he pulled up to tend to a suicidal gunman’s first two victims in Old East Dallas is in stable condition.

William An, 36, is “eager to face the next steps in his road to recovery,” Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said Monday.

An was critically wounded a week ago and lying in the street when Dallas police arrived to the home were gunman Derick Lamont Brown lurked inside and was later found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The officers saved An’s life when they pulled him into a squad car and drove him to Baylor University Medical Center where he reportedly went into cardiac arrest three times during surgery.

The bullets broke one of An’s legs and pierced an artery which caused significant blood loss.

Over the weekend, An, a 10-year veteran of the department, encouraged others with the fire department to “keep doing what you do,” Evans said.

An has a 3-year-old son and is expecting a second child with his wife.

“By the grace of God, my husband is doing okay. We are greatly thankful for all the prayers sent our way,” An’s wife, Jayne, said in a written statement. “Please continue to pray for Will and keep him and our entire family in your prayers. Special thanks again to the first responders who risk their lives daily for others. God bless.”

Anyone wishing to help An’s family can donate to the Dallas Firefighters Association’s Local 58 Relief Fund at www.local58relieffund.com.
