OSLO, Norway — At least three people were Wednesday reported dead and one missing after a runaway freight train smashed into a building
on an industrial estate in the Norwegian capital Oslo, police and local media reported.
Three people who sustained serious injuries in the accident were taken to the Ulleval University Hospital.
Some 15 freight cars are believed to have rolled several kilometres down the track before ramming into the warehouse. Some
cars plunged into a nearby canal.
Police contacted firms on the estate to establish if any employees were missing, resulting in a report of one missing person, according
to the Norwegian news agency NTB.
A search and rescue operation involving a helicopter and boats was underway and included efforts to see if any people had possibly been
thrown into the canal, the online edition of VG newspaper reported.
The runaway cars were not hitched to a locomotive, according to initial reports. It was not clear what caused the accident.
A few hours after the accident, train services resumed on the tracks near the estate.
