ALLEGHENY, Pa. — An unidentified woman fell 30 feet into a water pumping station facility as she and her husband walked along the Ohio River late Saturday in the 3300 block of West Carson Street, officials said.

City Emergency Medical Services personnel rescued the woman, who was taken to Allegheny General Hospital, North Side, about 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

“The manhole cover for the old pumping station was not secure, and the woman fell through about a 20-inch opening, down 30 feet and into about 10 feet of water,” EMS District Chief Raymond Everitt said.

EMS personnel set up a tripod over the hole, and lowered a member of the River Rescue squad to the woman, Everitt said.

“He attached a personal flotation device to the woman and when she was brought to the surface, we used a fire department aerial truck to swing her over the railroad tracks to a stretcher,” Everitt said.
