Olympic medalist looks to join Mass. fire department

America’s first judo gold medalist, Kayla Harrison, scored well on civil service test and took required EMT class

MARBLEHEAD, Mass. — A fire department in Mass. could soon be welcoming an Olympian to its crews — Judo gold medalist Kayla Harrison.

Kayla Harrison, who became America’s first judo gold medalist Thursday afternoon, is looking to join the Marblehead Fire Department.

For the past few days, a banner supporting Harrison has been hoisted outside the town’s firehouse, where her fiancé is already a firefighter.

Fire Chief Jason Gilliland told The Boston Herald that Harrison scored well on the civil service test and took the required EMT class, but she still must pass her state certification.

“It’s not a foregone conclusion, but she’s certainly in contention” to be hired, Chief Gilliland said.
