BETHEL TOWNSHIP, Ohio — In the wee hours of Thursday, May 9, the emergency dispatcher’s phone rang.

“We got a call for assistance at 3 a.m. A lady’s water had broken and she was in labor,” Bethel Twp.’s Fire & EMS Chief Jacob King said. “We get calls like this all the time. The majority of the time we give comfort, support, and care and take her to the birthing room or hospital.”

However, this time was a bit different. When paramedics Mya Mitchell, Selinda Sizemore and EMT Andrew Porter arrived a few minutes later at the Medway home, they discovered the labor was moving along very quickly. They immediately loaded the mother, Julie Striks, into the ambulance and took off with sirens wailing. The baby’s father Justin Ryan followed in his car. As they approached Miami Valley Hospital, it was apparent the baby could not wait.
