BURLINGTON, Iowa — A Burlington man suffered serious injuries Thursday afternoon when he was run over by his own truck near the intersection of Iowa 16 and U.S. 61, a Lee County official said Friday.

Bradley Dale Shipley, 45, 2809 Madison Ave., was driving a 2004 Ford F-250 pickup west on Iowa 16 when the accident occurred about 1 p.m., said Lee County Sheriff Jim Sholl.

“Mr. Shipley was towing a piece of construction equipment up the incline of the highway when it came loose,” Sholl said. “Mr. Shipley exited his vehicle attempting to stop the piece of equipment.”

However, Sholl said it appears Shipley “failed to place the truck into park, and the truck rolled backwards. Mr. Shipley attempted to stop the truck but was run over by the vehicle.”

Sholl said Shipley received multiple injuries and was flown by Med Force air ambulance to the University of Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City for treatment.

Hospital officials declined to release Shipley’s condition Friday, citing privacy issues.

The accident remains under investigation.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Wever Fire and Rescue and the Lee County EMS responded to the accident, Sholl said.
