KING CITY, Ontario — A paramedic’s song reflecting the emotional toll of being a first responder has gone viral.
Paramedic and volunteer firefighter Kevin Davison and Doug Folkins wrote “When Those Sirens Are Gone” to shed light on the emotional struggles first responders deal with. They said the song aims to raise awareness and help other responders.
“What I wanted to say is, ‘It’s OK to have feelings of sadness,’” Davison said. “It’s not a weakness.”
The duo teamed up with TEMA, an organization committed to helping responders with PTSD, to make the music video.
“The song’s message that you are not alone when you’re unable to sleep at night, that your colleagues and peers are also struggling with this, is powerful,” TEMA spokeswoman Erin Alvarez told LocalXpress. “It’s a normal reaction to an abnormal thing that has happened to you.”
The music video features paramedics and members of the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department.
