Firefighter, medic among injured in SC car crash

The medic was treated overnight and released, but the firefighter is still being treated a hospital

CHARLESTON, S.C. — A North Charleston man faces three counts of felony DUI after hitting at least six people with his vehicle at an accident scene on Ashley Phosphate Road near the Windsor Hill Food Lion shopping center just after 2 a.m. Saturday.

A North Charleston firefighter, a Charleston County paramedic and four bystanders were struck. The firefighter, whose name was not released, remained hospitalized Saturday following surgery at Medical University Hospital.

Felix Garcia-Romero is charged with three counts of felony driving under the influence as a result of the accident, said Spencer Pryor, spokesman for the North Charleston Police Department.Garcia-Romero also was charged with having no insurance or driver s license.

The injured medic was treated and released overnight, Fire Department information officer Bianca A. Sancic said. Information about the condition of the bystanders who were struck was not available.

North Charleston firefighters had been called to the initial accident at 3940 Ashley Phosphate Road to assist with a two-vehicle crash at 1:44 a.m. When they arrived they assisted Charleston County EMS with patient care. The second crash, which injured the emergency responders and bystanders, happened a little more than 15 minutes later.

Garcia-Romero, 26, of 1990 Hawthorne Drive, was arrested at the accident scene.
