A Hoffman Estates senior living facility honored four Barrington firefighter-medics as heroes for saving the life of one of its residents

CHICAGO — A Hoffman Estates senior living facility honored four Barrington firefighters as “Local Heroes” for saving the life of one of its residents.

Lieutenant Greg Keegan and firefighter-paramedics Eric Jordan, Angela Rausch and Art Thompson were presented with commemorative plaques during a Local Heroes Award ceremony recently at The Devonshire of Hoffman Estates.

The ceremony was designed “to recognize people who do incredible things,” said Tim Sullivan, director of sales and marketing.

The event also allowed 91-year-old Mel Rosenfeld to personally thank the firefighters who came to his aid as he choked on food at the Onion Pub and Brewery in Lake Barrington earlier this summer. Paramedics successfully cleared the obstruction and transported Rosenfeld to the hospital.

“We don’t see ourselves as heroes because we were doing what we are trained to do,” Lt. Keegan says. “I will say that it was very nice to see Mr. Rosenfeld at the ceremony.”

The Devonshire also presented awards to the Onion Pub staff for their efforts to help Rosenfeld until firefighters arrived.
