CHICAGO — The Chicago Fire Department has opened an internal investigation in the wake of the recent discovery of a drug case containing expired medicines found on a fire engine that’s used for paramedic calls.

“It is the policy of the department to ensure that all of our medical supplies are held in accordance with prescribed shelf-life limits and, based on the allegations, we are re-examining our system to see if revisions are needed and, if so, they will be implemented,” fire spokesman Larry Langford said.

The expired medications were discovered about a month ago in a fire engine at 110th Street and Homewood Avenue on the South Side. The drug boxes — which look like a toolbox — hold about 15 medications used by emergency medical workers.

The drugs are used for “a wide variety of needs that could occur in an emergency medical situation involving illness or injury,” Langford said.
