SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A San Bernardino firefighter paramedic who set out to establish a Guinness world record in snowboarding to promote a charity achieved his goal Saturday.
Jason Buchanan stood on a snowboard that was towed by a snowmobile for 100 meters. He originally planned on pulling off the record at 100 mph, but due to rough terrain, the snowmobile was only able to travel at 61 mph.
The world record was based on the distance, so he still qualifies for the world record book, Buchanan said.
“It wasn’t as fast as I wanted to go, but we got it accomplished,” he said.
Buchanan set the record to encourage people to donate equipment for winter sports, a charity that will benefit disabled and needy children.
The San Bernardino City Fire Department has already received about $5,000 in gear, along with offers for free lessons, transportation to the San Bernardino Mountains and other services.
Donations are still being accepted at any San Bernardino fire station.
San Bernardino firefighter paramedic Jason Buchanan established a Guinness world record in Mammoth Lakes on Saturday by being towed on a snowboard by a snowmobile for 100 meters at 61 mph. He performed the stunt for charity.
