NEW YORK — A woman was killed as she walked down the street after being stuck by plywood blown from a construction site.
Police said the 37-year-old, who has not been immediately identified, was walking around 5:50 p.m. Tuesday in front of 175th West 12th Street in Greenwich Village when she was hit by a 4 foot by 8 foot piece of plywood that was blown off a security fence surrounding a construction site, the New York Times reports.
The construction site is at 1 Seventh Avenue. It was not immediately clear how far the board fell before hitting the woman, but the impact slammed her against the wall. She was on her cellphone when she was struck, police said.
A 911 caller reported that the woman was lying on the ground and appeared to be confused. The caller said she had a head injury after wood from a building hit her, a city official told the Times.
EMS responded around 5:56 p.m. She was transported to Bellevue Hospital Center and declared dead at 9:12 p.m.
The incident is under investigation.
