SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A 54-year-old West Springfield man killed himself in the parking lot of Baystate Medical Center after shooting his wife earlier in the night, police said.
According to police, the man shot his wife on Piper Road in West Springfield and then brought her to Baystate, where she was listed in stable condition. The man then went to his red Fiat in the parking lot of the emergency department and put the gun to his head, police said.
Police responded and the hospital was locked down as officers attempted to negotiate with the man. After four hours of negotiations, the man shot himself in the head shortly after midnight, police said. He was brought into the hospital and pronounced dead.
No one else was injured and all hospital patients and employees were safe, police said.
“At no time was any patient, employee or civilian ever in danger,” Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney said in a statement.
