SHANGHAI — A man’s lower leg was amputated after a landing platform on a mall escalator gave way and he became stuck inside the machinery.
Video shows the 35-year-old man placing a cloth near the top of the escalator to clean the equipment, when one of the metal floor panels collapsed, trapping his left lower leg, CNN reports.
Emergency crews rescued the man. He was transported to the hospital where his leg was amputated from the calf down.
This is the third recent escalator incident in China that has resulted in a serious injury or fatality.
In Guangxi, a toddler suffered multiple injuries after he tripped and fell, and his left hand and arm became caught in a gap near the bottom of the escalator. In Beijing, a woman pushed her 2-year-old son to safety, and was killed after a landing platform collapsed and she became trapped in the still-moving machinery.
