MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. — Police officers and medical personnel responding to an early Wednesday 911 call of a woman in labor in Massapequa helped deliver a baby girl -- reviving the newborn after the umbilical cord became wrapped around her neck during birth.

Nassau County police said at least two ambulance crews, as well as a supervisor and officers from the Seventh Precinct, responded to the woman’s Hamilton Avenue home at 1:20 a.m.

Police said officers and crews from the Nassau County Police Ambulance Bureau arrived at the scene to find the mother-to-be, 30, collapsed on the floor “in labor.”

When personnel arrived, according to a statement from police, “It was determined that childbirth was imminent.”

During delivery the umbilical cord was wrapped around the newborn’s neck and she “was not breathing and had a weak pulse,” police said. Responders then suctioned the little girl’s mouth, reviving her.

Soon, police said, she was breathing on her own and “established a healthy color.” Additional details were not immediately available.
