ONEIDA, N.Y. — Authorities say a 5-year-old New York boy used his mother’s cellphone to call 911 for help after she died in a crash that also fatally injured his sister.

Police in Madison County say 31-year-old Ellen Caswell was driving home late Sunday in Oneida when she veered off the road and hit a utility pole, causing her vehicle to overturn in high grass along the road.

Her son, Kadyn Depasquale, found her phone and called his father, who instructed him to call 911. The boy told a dispatcher his mother and sister were dead and he didn’t know exactly where he was.

Police found the vehicle because Kadyn honked its horn.

Caswell died at the scene. Ten-year-old Kelsey Caswell-Young died Monday at a Syracuse hospital.

Kadyn wasn’t injured.
