OAKLAND, Calif. — Authorities have identified a 23-year-old Oakland man who died after he fled a traffic stop and became wedged between two buildings Sunday evening.
Richard Lamar Linyard Jr. reportedly fled officers who pulled him over on a traffic stop about 5:43 p.m. Sunday. He fled and was later found by police in a small space between two East Oakland buildings. The cause of death hasn’t been released, pending toxicology and other test results that could take 60 days, according to a spokesman with Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau.
Officers had stopped Linyard’s vehicle in the 1300 block of 65th Avenue. When he ran from the car into nearby yards, they waited for more officers to arrive and set up a perimeter, police said.
Officers then learned he was wanted on a $10,000 warrant, and found a pound of marijuana inside the car, police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said Monday afternoon.
Thirty minutes into a search, officers found the 6-foot, 190-pound Linyard unresponsive and wedged between the buildings.
Officers performed CPR while waiting for an ambulance, and Linyard was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Oakland police officers did not use force during the traffic stop or search for the man, Watson said.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Office and the Oakland police homicide and internal affairs divisions are investigating the death.
