Texas fire dept. trials new head injury drug

The clinical trial aims to prove whether the drug is a viable option to reduce excess bleeding from traumatic brain injuries

PLANO, Texas — A Texas fire department is testing a new drug for treating traumatic brain injuries.

Star Local Media reported that the clinical trial with Tranexamic Acid (TXA) allows victims to begin receiving treatment before they get to the hospital. The product also helps stop excess bleeding.

“Every minute is critical,” said Jack Sides, Plano Fire-Rescue captain and EMS coordinator.

Plano Fire-Rescue EMS personnel have been trained to administer TXA when certain conditions are met. Patients must have a chance of survival and can’t be pregnant, incarcerated or under the age of consent.

Data collected from the study will be evaluated from the Resuscitation Outcome Consortium to determine the effectiveness and best dosages of TXA.

Other Texas fire departments are expected to join the study soon.
