NEW CASTLE COUNTY, Del. — Another handful of New Castle County emergency-services workers could lose their jobs in the coming weeks if the government and the employees’ union cannot come to an agreement over how to trim costs.

The administration said Friday it needs to cut an additional $152,000 from the department’s budget, which is the equivalent of “two or three” paramedics, 911 call takers or dispatchers. Nine paramedics-in-training were laid off in May after the union refused 5 percent salary reductions that were accepted by a majority of the county’s 1,500 employees.

“We want to make it clear that the administration does not want to lay off any additional people,” said Tracy Surles, the county’s chief administrative officer. “Clearly, this is one of the most vital services we provide.”
