KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A police officer on his way to a medical call in Kansas City early Wednesday ran over the patient with his car, investigators said.
Someone had reported a man down in the street near 19th Street and Brighton Avenue about 4:35 a.m. The first officer on the scene could not find the man so he continued to drive slowly while looking. He crested a hill and ran over the man, who was unconscious in the street.
The man apparently was not run over by the patrol car’s tires, but his body was dragged under the middle of the car. The officer who hit him and another officer lifted the car to free the victim and provide initial medical treatment.
Police believe the man was intoxicated. He appeared to suffer mostly road rash and burns from being run over, police said.
The victim, in his 30s, lives in south Kansas City, police said. They were not sure why he was at 19th and Brighton.
