SURREY, British Columbia — Shannon Knackstedt was on a balloon ride with her husband and two daughters Friday, in a celebration of her upcoming 50th birthday. Little did she know it was a birthday she would never see.
Knackstedt and her daughter Gemma were killed in a horrific hot-air balloon crash Friday in Surrey, B.C. when the air vessel broke away from its ground supports, caught fire and came crashing back to the Earth engulfed in flames.
On Monday, the owners of the hot-air balloon suspended operations, just as some of the surviving 10 passengers and pilot began to emerge from hospital and tell the tragic tale. Diane Rutledge was one such person.
