Miss. EMT father faces own family’s emergency

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Imagine this: You drive an ambulance. You have a child. Fatherhood and public safety inhabit two separate worlds.

Then the worlds meet with these words - “Something’s wrong with Gracie. I need you here, now.”

The drive to get from where you are to where you need to be takes two minutes, but it seems like two hours. One bridge exists from here to there, as do two curvy roads, one stoplight and a heart full of worry.

This is what happened two Saturdays ago, when Gabe Smith of Brandon was halfway through his 24-hour shift as an emergency medical technician with American Medical Response.
