ORLANDO, Fla. — A man who sustained gunshot wounds and tried to drive himself to a hospital flagged down an ambulance on Interstate 4, prompting police to close off traffic lanes during its investigation.

The shooting victim, who hasn’t been identified yet, was trying to drive himself to the hospital about 3:10 p.m., Orlando police said.

On Interstate 4 near John Young Parkway, the shooting victim got the attention of an ambulance traveling in the area, police said.

He was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was sent into surgery and listed in critical condition, police said. Police believe he was shot somewhere in Orange County, possibly in Tangelo Park, and turned over the investigation to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Because of his condition, police have few details about what happened.

At least one lane of I-4 eastbound was blocked from John Young Parkway to the Florida’s Turnpike.

The shooting victim likely prompted the entire hospital to be locked down Sunday evening until 6 p.m., said Geo Morales, the hospital’s media relations manager. For nearly two hours no one was allowed in or out. Morales said the facility is locked down when a shooting victim is brought in and the shooter is still at large.
