LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A former EMT who was in prison for causing a crash that killed a patient is getting out of prison early.

Tammy Brewer has served five months of a ten-year sentence.

Brewer asked for and received shock probation — but she will not be back out on the streets anytime soon.

The judge granted Brewer shock probation, but with conditions.

Instead of being released from prison, she will transition from state custody to Metro Corrections.

After twelve months, the judge will re-evaluate the case to determine if she’s ready to be released on probation.

Maggie Whobrey, the victim’s daughter, spoke in court Monday: “And I just feel that if she does not get the treatment that she needs, that another family’s going to have to feel this same way that I feel.

“And I just don’t ever want that to happen.”

Brewer admitted she was under the influence of methadone when she crashed the ambulance in April of 2008.

Fifty-three-year-old Vickie Whobrey was being transported to the hospital for a severe nose bleed.

Another ambulance ended up taking Whobrey to the hospital, but she later died.

In December of last year, Brewer accepted a plea agreement calling for that ten-year sentence.

She had been charged with murder after the crash, but under the deal that charge was changed to manslaughter, assault, and operating a vehicle under the influence.
