Audit: DC Fire and EMS failed to implement reforms over 9 years

A report found that only 11 of 36 recommendations made in 2007 were carried out, including a call to cross train firefighters and paramedics

WASHINGTON — An audit finds that the District of Columbia’s fire department hasn’t carried out more than a dozen reforms recommended after the 2006 death of a mugging victim dismissed as drunk by emergency crews.

D.C. Auditor Kathleen Patterson’s report released Thursday found that only 11 of 36 recommendations made in 2007 have been fully implemented, including a call to cross train firefighters and paramedics. Another six were partially implemented and four more were implemented and later rescinded.

The audit, which began in February, came after a series of problems that raised accountability and safety issues.

Patterson notes that while the city’s population has increased since 2007, the number of emergency responders has decreased.

Acting Fire Chief Gregory Dean says he plans to address all the recommendations.
