CHICAGO — A Chicago EMT teen is being credited with saving the life of a 5-year-old girl after performing CPR when she was pulled from Lake Michigan.
Kianti Champion, 19, who had just completed her EMT certification from Black Fire Brigade, when a swimmer pulled the unresponsive girl out of the water, Blavity reports. Champion quickly ran over and began chest compressions until help arrived.

The girl was transported to the hospital, but her condition is currently unknown per the family’s wishes.
“Black Fire Brigade started a year ago to train kids for careers as paramedics and firefighters,” Lt. Quention Curtis, president of Black Fire Brigade, said. “One of the reasons we started this, the Black Fire Brigade, is to reduce the violence in the community. So, our motto is: If you teach a kid to save a life, they’ll be less likely to take a life.”
