HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — A La Mirada man found off the coast of Huntington Beach was pronounced dead at a hospital Friday.

Lifeguards pulled Christopher James, 54, out of the water near Sixth Street at about 3:20 p.m. They performed CPR on James, who was taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, where he was pronounced dead, Marine Safety Lt. Michael Beuerlein said.

The Orange County coroner’s office said an autopsy determined that James drowned.

Beuerlein said James was fully clothed, including shoes, when he was taken from the ocean.

“I don’t know how he got out into the water,” Beuerlein said. “We’d like to know what he was doing and how he got in the water.”
