MAPLEWOOD TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A longtime captain of the Maplewood Volunteer First Aid Squad died Monday after transporting a patient.

Bruce Mandel, 47, had taken a patient to St. Barnabas Hospital and was returning to Maplewood when he began feeling ill.

Mandel stopped at the Maplewood Fire Department for assistance, and the MFD personnel encouraged him to seek attention, Maplewood Town Clerk Elizabeth Fritzen said.
