2 frequent flyers account for 1.3% of all ambulance calls in Calif. county

Pervasive problem facing local EMS systems: is it possible to draw a line?

FRESNO, California — Two homeless men in a Calif. county have called for an ambulance on average nearly twice a day for more than a year.

The 1,363 combined trips made up 1.34 percent of all American Ambulance calls in Fresno in 2011, according to The Fresno Bee.

Cesar Arana, 41, said he calls for an ambulance so frequently due to major problems with his liver, while Lonzel McPeters, 51, told the newspaper he has repeated seizures.

“We do not refuse any service,” said Dan Lynch, Fresno County’s emergency medical services director. “If they want to go to the hospital, we will take them. It’s easier to take them than to take the time to talk them out of it.”
