NJ EMS volunteers to improve response times

New 16-point plan restructures the way dispatch calls are placed

MAHWAH – It took five months of meetings but township officials and members of the municipality’s two ambulance corps say they have worked out a way to ensure timely responses when residents need them most.

A new 16-point plan retains the set-up of the all-volunteer emergency response squads but, among other changes, restructures the way dispatch calls are placed with the township units and mutual-aid stations in neighboring municipalities.

“We’ve been back and forth since December,” Mayor William Laforet said of late-night negotiations that eventually led to the current agreement. He noted that response times have been an issue as far back as 2003 and throughout the administrations of at least two other mayors.
