COVINGTON, La. — An emergency medical technician was found dead in his Covington home Saturday in what the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating as a possible homicide.

Mario Scramuzza, 48, of 44 Greenhill Drive was found dead by deputies after he failed to report to work at St. Tammany Parish’s 3rd Fire Protection District on Saturday morning.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. George Bonnett said fire district officials contacted the Sheriff’s Office when Scramuzza did not show up.

Bonnett would not say what caused deputies to believe the death was suspicious or whether Scramuzza had any injuries that appeared to have been inflicted by another person.

Investigators are waiting on an autopsy, which could occur Monday, to determine the cause of death before declaring whether the death was a homicide, Bonnett said. If it is ruled a homicide, it will be St. Tammany Parish’s first this year.
