Dignified NJ responder charged with stealing $17K

The 2011 “Firefighter of the Year” is accused of making personal withdrawals and purchases while serving as treasurer

LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. — A 2011 “firefighter of the year” was charged today with stealing from the department where she had been a longtime volunteer.

Cynthia “Cindy” Tillett Strauss, 34, of West Amwell Township was charged with stealing more than $17,000, allegedly by making unauthorized ATM withdrawals of more than $2,000 as treasurer of the Lambertville Fire Department Board of Engineers, and using a credit card to make more than $15,000 worth of personal purchases and withdrawals as treasurer of Columbia Fire Company.

The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrest the evening of Oct. 1 and said it followed an “extensive investigation by the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Lambertville Police Department.”
