BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A transient woman who helped give first aid to a man who overdosed on heroin was arrested in connection with the use of a credit card reported stolen during a home burglary.
Crystal D. Scrogham, 34, faces charges of theft and fraud stemming from an Oct. 30 home burglary investigation and charges of resisting law enforcement and obstructing emergency medical personnel during the overdose incident Wednesday night.
Police and an ambulance responded to a report of an unconscious and unresponsive man near storage units in the 1800 block of South Walnut Street at 11:16 p.m. Wednesday. Scrogham and a man were performing CPR on a 55-year-old man who had overdosed on heroin as emergency responders arrived, according to Bloomington Police Department Sgt. Joe Crider.
Officers and medics took over rescue breathing and gave the man naloxone, the drug that reverses opioid overdose. He regained consciousness and was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
Emergency responders asked Scrogham to step aside several times as they worked. She did not comply and flailed about, Crider said.
As she was placed under arrest, Scrogham said she was having a seizure. She was first taken to the hospital, where it was determined she did not have a seizure, and she was booked into the jail, police said.
Investigators had been looking for Scrogham, who they said was captured in Wal-Mart surveillance footage using a credit card stolen in an Oct. 30 home burglary on North Maple Street.
In that case, a person or persons entered the home through an unlocked window as the residents slept. A television, electronics, video game systems, computers, phones, wallets and keys were reported stolen. So was a 2001 green Honda Accord, which police found crashed in a wooded area about a mile away.
This case remains under investigation. Bloomington police are giving Scrogham time to detox before they interview her at the jail about the home burglary, Crider said.
