ALBANY, N.Y. — “Ambulance 33” is the fifth ambulance purchased as part of an agreement between Mohawk Ambulance and the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center.
According to WNYT News, the vehicle was designed to specifically care for infants and small children. It acts as a mobile intensive care to buy time for patients until they can be transferred into a hospital.
First dispatched April 6, the ambulance has responded to more than 100 calls in New York and parts of Massachusetts.
Some child-specific features of Ambulance 33 include a custom-built lift to handle isolates and cribs, as well as a backup battery that will prevent power outages from compromising care. The medical grade compressors on board provide oxygen therapy to delicate patients for up to 24 hours.
In addition to new equipment, the ambulance’s transport teams may include specially trained nurses and respiratory therapists to pick up and transport young patients.
