Fla. ambulance drives into ditch with patient inside

A medic suffered minor injuries, while the patient and another responder were not hurt

ORLANDO, Fla. — An on-duty patrol officer watched as a Rural/Metro ambulance veered off the roadway and landed in a ditch in Winter Park around 3:20 a.m. Wednesday, according to Winter Park Police.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Jamie Joyce said the driver of the ambulance suffered minor injuries and was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center.

There was one patient and another Rural/Metro employee inside the ambulance at the time of the crash. They were not hurt, Joyce said.

The crash happened in the 900 block of N. Wymore Avenue, near Lee Road in Winter Park.

Joyce said crews are having difficulty towing the ambulance, which partially rolled over in the crash. The roadway is closed until the area is cleared of the crash.

“It doesn’t seem like the ambulance was speeding or that the driver was drunk,” Joyce said.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Joyce said she could not detail where the ambulance was heading with the patient at this time because it would compromise the patient’s identity.
