ARCHER CITY, Texas — The city manager of Archer City said bees that attacked a man there Monday have been exterminated.

The man, Roy Lee Pope, 58, was rushed toward United Regional Hospital in Wichita Falls after the attack , but the Archer County ambulance carrying him was involved in a wreck just blocks from the hospital.

Pope was pronounced dead at the scene.

City manager George Hoffman said it was not clear whether the bee attack at a bank was responsible for Pope’s death or if the wreck was a contributing factor.

An autopsy has been ordered.

Hoffman said Pope operated a small lawn mower repair shop and was apparently attacked by the bees when he entered the building.

Hoffman said it was decided the bees should be exterminated before “a child or someone else got hurt.”

The ambulance that carried Pop e wa s broad sided at 11th and Holliday streets in Wichita Falls.

Hoffman said four Archer City people were injured, two firefighters and two medical personnel. He said th at three of them were treated and released and that one was hospitalized.

The woman driving the car that struck the ambulance suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. Sgt. Joe Snyder, Wichita Falls police spokesman, said no charges have been filed in connection with the incide nt .

Hoffman said that Archer County has a second ambulance and that a Wichita Falls company is providing another one so the region can be served until the wrecked unit is repaired.
