NEWTON, N.C. — An ambulance is being converted by police into a mobile crime scene unit.
The Hickory Record reported that the Newton Police Department will use the former Catawba County EMS ambulance to process evidence easier at crime scenes, and will also use the rig as a mobile command post, according to Maj. Tim Hayes.
“Typically, larger departments have mobile crime scene units, because patrol units can only carry so many items. With the mobile unit, we will be able to house those items and equipment easier, which will give us more options,” Hayes said.
The surplus ambulance is set to be ready for use in two weeks, but Hayes said it “will still be a work in progress.”
“We have items that we will transfer from patrol units to the mobile unit, but we will also start looking at adding items and equipment later on,” he said.
