SAN PABLO, Calif. — Contra Costa emergency service officials stopped emergency ambulance traffic to Doctors Medical Center beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday.
DMC and county health officials had originally planned to begin rerouting emergency ambulances to other hospitals on Tuesday but decided to move up the date because staffing the emergency room had become increasingly difficult.
Hospital CEO Dawn Gideon requested the halt in ambulance traffic because of staffing losses, according to county health services director Dr. William Walker said. Nearly 100 employees have resigned amid fiscal strife at the hospital, which is running an $18 million deficit and has been unsuccessful in asking district taxpayers and the county for new funding.
