PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The owner of a Huntingdon Valley ambulance company pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health-care fraud Thursday afternoon.

Beana Bell, 32, of Philadelphia was described during court proceedings as a “minor participant” in the alleged fraud scheme, under which Superior EMS Ambulance Co. submitted $4.4 million in claims to Medicare for providing transportation services to elderly patients who were able to walk and could travel safely by means other than ambulance. Such patients are not eligible for ambulance transportation coverage under the government program.

Medicare paid more than $2.4 million in claims for services that were medically unnecessary, according to court records.
