KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Residents are filing a petition to block the city from outsourcing ambulance billing services, saying the city council should either reconsider its decision, or allow the public to vote on the matter.
The city council approved turning the ambulance fee collection work over to Advanced Data Processing, but locals have expressed concerns with the company, pointing to a situation where Dallas, Texas parted ways with the business KMBC.com reports.
The ambulance unit of the Kansas City Fire Department currently manages the billing. Mayor Sly James said ambulance fee collection is not a basic function of city government, and is supportive of having an outside company do the work.
The petition would block the changes for 30 days in order to gain additional signatures to force the council to reconsider or hold a public vote.
