Ambulance chase from Ind. to Chicago ends with arrest

Police followed it with GPS tracking, and arrested a 34-year-old man when he stopped in a vacant lot

CHICAGO — A Gary man is expected to face charges in Indiana and Illinois after he was arrested following the pursuit of an ambulance stolen from Highland, Ind., police said.

The man, 34, was arrested in the 9000 block of South Mackinaw Street in Chicago, after being pursued from near Cline Avenue and Ridge Road in Highland, Ind., starting a little before 12:40 p.m., according to a news release from the Lake County, Ind., sheriff’s office.

A Lake County, Ind., sheriff’s officer started pursuing the ambulance, which had been stolen from Prompt Ambulance Services in Highland after it was reported stolen about 12:30 p.m. At first following the ambulance via GPS tracking, the officer spotted it turning onto Indianapolis Boulevard from Chicago Avenue in East Chicago, then pursued it into Chicago.

Chicago police joined the pursuit, and the ambulance drove into a vacant lot near 9000 S. Mackinaw and stopped. Police arrested the man without incident, according to the release.

Charges against the man are pending in Indiana and Illinois, according to the release.
