2 hurt in Pa. ambulance crash

The driver lost control and was cited for a traffic violation; injuries were minor

POCONO TOWNSHIP, Pa. — An ambulance crashed on I-80 west in Pocono Township Thursday.

According to state police, a private ambulance likely belonging to Life Star Ambulance was traveling west on Interstate 80 near mile marker 296.5 when the driver lost control and the vehicle. The ambulance traveled onto the southern shoulder where it struck an embankment at the 10 o’clock position. The ambulance sustained damage to the windshield.

It came to rest just west of the area of initial impact where it was stuck in the deep snow alone the southern shoulder.

The driver, David Hickey, 21, of East Stroudsburg did not suffer any injuries. Two passengers, Scott Kristiniak, 36, of Reading and Ashley Farmer, 23, of Effort were taken to Pocono Medical Center for evaluation of minor injuries. Police indicate Hickey was wearing a shoulder restraint while the two passengers were not and a restrain was not applicable, according to the police report.

The incident occurred at 4 a.m.

Hickey was cited for a traffic violation.

The ambulance was removed from the scene under its own power but Life Star Ambulance requested it be towed back to its garage for inspection.
