Listen: Medic’s 911 call of wild ride in hijacked ambulance

The medic narrates what happened when two people stole an ambulance while he was sleeping in the back

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Police released the 911 tape of an Albuquerque paramedic who was sleeping in the back of an ambulance and woke up to find it had been carjacked.

“I’m in the back of my own ambulance that has just been stolen,” he says to a dispatcher. “We are racing up Central eastbound.”

“Do they know you’re in the back?” she asks.

“They might,” he responds. “I’m not sure, but they’re not stopping.”

The ambulance was parked outside Lovelace Hospital. With the doors unlocked and the engine running, a man and a woman hopped into the vehicle and took off, Kob.com reports.

The paramedic was able to escape by jumping out of the ambulance at an intersection, where he waited for police who then gave chase and eventually arrested the couple.
