SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — A 34-year-old woman was arrested Monday afternoon after leading several law enforcement agencies on a highway chase stretching from San Jose to downtown Santa Cruz.

The California Highway Patrol was called to assist San Jose Police with a reported kidnapping after a woman reportedly got into a medical transport van parked at a dialysis clinic in East San Jose, said CHP Officer Sam Courtney. In the back of the van was an 84-year-old man who was taken along for an at-times low-speed highway chase, Courtney said.

“Within just a few seconds, the woman walking by jumps in the ambulance and steals it and takes off,” Courtney said. “They were able to ping that van and give us a location. It was reported on Highway 17, coming towards Santa Cruz.”

CHP patrols picked up the chase near the Granite Creek exit off Highway 17 and followed the driver down Ocean Street into Santa Cruz.

Courtney said the woman, Marlina Rose Adame, of San Jose, reportedly was acting abnormally when she ultimately was stopped shortly after 4 p.m. on Water Street near the Town Clock. The patient in the back of the van, however, was uninjured and described as in “really good spirits” after the trip and may not have known exactly what had happened, according to Courtney. Santa Cruz police assisted in the pursuit and San Jose police transported Adame back to Santa Clara County Jail.
